Jeff Bezos is facing renewed scrutiny after images of his newly renovated Florida mansion surfaced online, prompting debate over wealth, privilege, and environmental impact.

According to Realtor.com, Bezos has been upgrading an $87 million temporary residence in Indian Creek Village while construction continues on his much larger megamansion nearby.

The property has received extensive landscaping updates, including Brazilian beauty-leaf trees, Japanese yews, and gumbo-limbo trees, alongside incoming additions such as a sauna, spa, fire pit, gym, and poolside office.

Reports also noted that nearly every interior room has been replaced since Bezos purchased the home in April 2024.

Indian Creek Village, often called the “Billionaire Bunker," is known for its exclusivity, private police force, and limited entry, but has also attracted controversy for depending on surrounding communities for services while benefiting from taxpayer-funded infrastructure.

Critics noted that Bezos saved roughly $1 billion in taxes by relocating from Washington to Florida.

Environmental concerns are also fuelling the backlash. Studies have found that ultra-wealthy lifestyles contribute disproportionately to carbon emissions, with Bezos frequently cited for the impact of his massive properties and private jets.

Large luxury homes demand high energy use, and in Florida, where 75% of the electrical grid relies on gas, that translates into significant pollution.
