The European Union (EU) has an interesting plan to escape American technology completely as it is entering a new era of digital sovereignty, advancing an ambitious strategy to build independent digital systems and sharply reduce reliance on US tech giants.

European officials have argued that foreign technology companies, especially those based in America, can no longer be trusted to meet Europe’s long-term digital needs, particularly as geopolitical tensions escalate.

At the heart of the EU’s proposal is the creation of a self-sustaining “EuroStack”, a layered technology ecosystem spanning space, semiconductors, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence.

EU leaders noted that this framework is designed to protect Europe from the risk of other powers weaponising technological dependencies, something they claim the US has not hesitated to do in recent years.

Rather than attempting to match the entire American tech industry, the EU aims to build “just enough” capability in these critical sectors to ensure strategic autonomy.

That includes boosting European chip development, expanding cloud capacity, and accelerating investment into homegrown AI.

Brussels also anticipates pushback from Washington, especially as the initiative directly challenges US tech dominance.

Still, EU policymakers insist they can make selective concessions while keeping the broader mission intact.
