Charity head accused of embezzling over $71,000 in Montpelier
The police report notes that the funds aimed to support the non-profit’s projects
After a lengthy investigation, Montpelier police have uncovered that the head of a local non-profit organisation allegedly embezzled tens of thousands of dollars over a three-year period.
According to local police, the case began on July 19th, when officials received a report regarding the misappropriation of funds at the Central Vermont Economic Development Corporation.
The organisation, which supports local economic initiatives, claimed that its executive director had been using company money for personal gain.
Authorities say the executive director Melissa Bounty of Waitsfield, is alleged to have embezzled a total of $71,151.73 during her tenure from 2022 to 2025.
The investigation reportedly involved detailed reviews of financial records, expense reports, and bank transactions to fully analyse of the alleged misconduct.
The police report notes that the funds were intended to support the non-profit’s projects and community programmes, making the alleged embezzlement particularly concerning the local community who relied on the organisation’s services.
Bounty has been cited to appear in Washington County Superior Court on January 15th.
