A 93-year-old man walked into police custody just after midnight on Saturday and calmly reported that he had shot his wife.

According to the Fremont Police Department, officers were dispatched shortly after 12.20am to a parking lot on Mowry Avenue after a caller said he had shot his spouse and wanted to surrender, reports KTVU.

When police arrived, they found Richard Hocking standing near his car. Inside the vehicle, his 86-year-old wife sat in the front passenger seat with a gunshot wound.

She was pronounced dead at the scene. Police did not release her name. Officers also recovered a firearm from inside the car.

Hocking was arrested taken to the Fremont Police Department, where he gave detectives a statement explaining his actions. Police declined to share details of what he told them.

The investigation remains ongoing.
