Elon Musk’s X faces UK probe over Grok AI image concerns

Elon Musk’s social media platform X (formerly Twitter) is facing fresh regulatory pressure in the United Kingdom (UK) after the country's data watchdog raised concerns over images generated by AI chatbot, Grok.

Britain’s Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) said it has contacted X and Musk's AI startup, xAI to seek clarity on how they are complying with UK data protection laws.

The move follows reports that Grok has been used to create sexualised and non-consensual images.

In a statement, the ICO said people have the right to use social media platforms knowing their personal data is handled lawfully and with respect.

The regulator added that it is aware of reports raising “serious concerns” about the type of content produced by Grok and wants assurances that adequate safeguards are in place to protect users’ rights.

The controversy comes amid growing backlash against Grok, which operates directly within X. Multiple reports have highlighted cases in which users prompted the chatbot to generate inappropriate images involving women and, in some instances, underage girls.

These allegations have sparked ethical and legal concerns across several countries. Regulatory scrutiny has intensified in recent weeks. A UK government minister has urged Musk to take action to stop Grok from producing such material, while media regulator Ofcom has also made urgent contact with X to request further information.

Beyond the UK, authorities in Europe, India, Malaysia, and Brazil have launched probes following a global rise in non-consensual intimate images linked to the AI tool.
