Jennette McCurdy discusses toxic past relationship with ‘red flags all over’
Jennette McCurdy discusses ‘exhausting’ former relationship amid new book’s release
Jennette McCurdy has revealed an unsettling relationship from her past, describing the age-gap dynamic as “exhausting”.
While making an appearance to promote her debut novel, Half His Age, the former Nickelodeon alum made an appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast January 7.
“I was most likely 18. He would show me movies that he thought I would like. Like, ‘Dazed and Confused’ which I did not like but I pretended to like. He would play me music that I did not like, but I pretended to like,” the currently 33-year-old actress and writer told host Alex Cooper.
The relationship, McCurdy added, began while her ex was still seeing — and living with — another woman.
“It was just exhausting,” she continued. “I remember he came over drunk one night to my apartment. At this point I’ve moved out of my mom’s, I’m very new — also red flags all over.”
After ending his other relationship, the iCarly alum’s former boyfriend insisted on staying with her — a “dilemma” she was faced with while taking care of her then-ailing mother.
“I can’t have my dying mother and my boyfriend that she doesn’t know about and would never approve of staying at my apartment at the same time,” she explained. “We have a dilemma on our hands. He uses the ‘You can’t meet my needs’ thing a lot. I go, ‘OK, I’ll get us a hotel room.’”
Further describing the anonymous man as a “f****** loser”, McCurdy wondered, “Can you imagine now being with like a [teenager]? Creepy.”
Jenette McCurdy is prepping up for the release of her debut novel, Half His Age, set to drop on January 20. The book follows her highly successful memoir, I’m Glad My Mom Died, released in 2022.
