In a significant development, Apple has partnered with Google to strengthen its artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, including a major upgrade to Siri expected later this year.

As reported by CNBC, the multi-year collaboration will see Apple rely on Google’s Gemini AI models and cloud technology to support its future Apple Foundation Models.

Both companies have noted that the models will continue to run directly on Apple devices, alongside Apple’s private cloud compute, to maintain performance and privacy standards.

“After careful evaluation, we determined that Google’s technology provides the most capable foundation for Apple Foundation Models, and we’re excited about the innovative new experiences it will unlock for our users,” the statement reads.

Earlier this year, Bloomberg reported that Apple was in early discussions with Google about using a customised version of Gemini to power a new version of Siri.

However, a later report suggested Apple could pay around $1 billion annually to access Google’s AI technology, highlighting the scale of the partnership.

The deal reflects growing confidence in Google’s AI strategy as it competes more aggressively with rivals such as OpenAI.

Notably, Google already pays Apple billions of dollars each year to remain the default search engine on iPhones.
