The US military has moved forward with adopting Elon Musk’s Grok artificial intelligence chatbot, even as the tool continues to face international criticism for enabling nonconsensual and sexualised image generation.

The US Defense Department has confirmed plans to integrate Grok into Pentagon networks, including systems that handle classified information.

The decision marks a significant step in the department’s broader push to expand the use of advanced artificial intelligence (AI) across military operations.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Grok will operate alongside generative AI tools developed by Google.

The initiative is aimed at embedding leading AI models across both classified and unclassified military infrastructure.

Speaking at SpaceX headquarters in South Texas, Hegseth said the Pentagon would soon deploy top-tier AI systems across all of its networks.

He confirmed that Grok is expected to go live within the Defense Department later this month and that military and intelligence data would be made available for AI-driven analysis.

Hegseth described the rollout as a rapid expansion of AI capabilities across defense operations.

He noted that the Pentagon possesses decades of “combat-proven operational data” from military and intelligence missions, stressing that the effectiveness of AI systems depends heavily on the quality and scale of data they receive.

The move reflects a growing partnership between the US government and Musk’s AI venture xAI.

In July 2025, the Pentagon signed a $200 million contract under its “Grok for Government” programme to deploy Grok 4 and custom national security tools within classified environments.
