Trump claims Microsoft to adjust AI buildout so consumers don’t pay for power use
Microsoft will make changes to AI expansion plans
US President Donald Trump has said that Microsoft will make changes to its artificial intelligence (AI) expansion plans to ensure Americans do not face higher electricity bills as more data centres are built.
In a post shared on Truth Social, Trump said his administration is working closely with major US technology companies to prevent consumers from bearing the cost of rising power demand driven by AI infrastructure.
“I never want Americans to pay higher electricity bills because of data centres. Therefore, my administration is working with major American technology companies to secure their commitment to the American people, and we will have much to announce in the coming weeks.”
The comments come as Trump looks to keep consumer costs down ahead of this year’s midterm elections.
The president has faced growing pressure over rising prices, partly linked to tariffs imposed last year on imported goods, which continue to ripple through the US economy.
In recent months, Trump has floated several measures aimed at easing financial pressure on households. In December, he announced a $1,776 “warrior dividend” for US soldiers.
Earlier this month, he also pushed for the purchase of $200 billion in mortgage bonds in an effort to bring down mortgage rates.
Trump praised Microsoft’s willingness to cooperate, suggesting that similar commitments from other tech giants could follow.
He said Microsoft would begin making “major changes” this week to ensure Americans do not “pick up the tab” for data centre power use through higher utility bills.
