Elon Musk has announced that Tesla will shift its full self-driving (FSD) software to a subscription-only model beginning February 14.

The move marks a change in how the electric vehicle (EV) maker offers one of its most talked-about driver assistance features.

As of now, Tesla allows vehicle owners in the United States to access FSD (Supervised) either through a one-time payment of $8,000 or via a monthly subscription priced at $99.

However, starting mid-February, customers will only be able to use the feature through a monthly plan, Musk noted.

For the unversed, FSD is an advanced driver assistance system that still requires active human supervision.

Drivers must remain attentive at all times and be ready to take control of the vehicle whenever necessary.

Tesla has repeatedly stressed that the software does not make its cars fully autonomous.

Notably, the system has also faced regulatory scrutiny. In 2025, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an investigation into nearly 2.9 million Tesla vehicles equipped with FSD.

The probe followed more than 50 reports of traffic safety violations and multiple crashes linked to the software.

In response, Tesla added the label “Supervised” to FSD in passenger vehicles. An unsupervised version is only used internally to move cars from factory assembly lines to delivery areas.
