Amazon to appeal against Italian antitrust fine despite reduction
Amazon will appeal Italian court decision of EUR 752.4m fine
Amazon has announced that it will appeal an Italian court decision even after the ruling reduced a EUR 1.13 billion antitrust fine to EUR 752.4 million.
Imposed in 2021, the original fine accused the US-based e-commerce giant of abusing its dominant market position and limiting competition in e-commerce logistics services in Italy.
The reduction followed a ruling by a regional administrative court last September. However, Amazon said it “strongly disagrees” with the decision, believes the fine should not apply at all, and will continue to challenge it through legal channels.
"As previously stated, we strongly disagree with the decision of the Italian Competition Authority, and we will continue to emphasise our position throughout the legal proceedings," the company said in a statement.
Amazon’s decision to move forward with an appeal was first reported by Italian financial newspaper MF.
The company maintains that its logistics services, including its Fulfilment by Amazon (FBA) program, are optional and designed to benefit both sellers and consumers by improving delivery speed and reliability.
Meanwhile, Italian authorities are also expected to challenge the reduction in the fine.
According to MF, the Italian regulator plans to appeal the ruling that lowered the penalty, signalling that the legal battle is far from over.
