ICE officer shoots man in leg amid shovel attack
A shooting incident happened on Wednesday night in North Minneapolis during an arrest operation
A gunfire event took place Wednesday night in north Minneapolis after US Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers were confronted by individuals wielding shovels during an arrest activity as part of Operation Metro Surge, three US officials informed CBS News.
A Venezuelan migrant involved was hit in the leg by a bullet but is anticipated to recover, according to two officials familiar with the situation, CBS News reports.
A significant crowd has assembled at the location, leading to confrontations between protesters and law enforcement late Wednesday night.
This incident occurred precisely one week after ICE officer Jonathan Ross fatally shot 37-year-old Renee Good in south Minneapolis.
As detailed by law enforcement officers briefed on the case, the shooting happened around 7 pm during a focused ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations mission near North Sixth Street and North 24th Avenue.
Authorities report that one man, armed with a shovel and identified as an "illegal alien" from Venezuela, the main target of this mission, attacked an ICE officer, striking and attempting a blow to the officer's head. In response, an ICE ERO agent fired, hitting the man in the leg.
Following the shooting, the individual fled into a home. Law enforcement officials later clarified that three additional targets were present inside the house. All four people barricaded themselves within the residence.
Given the standoff situation, extra agents were summoned to the site, officials noted.
Officers gained entry to the house with support from a specialised ICE tactical unit. It's believed all persons inside were detained.
Both the ICE officer and the injured man were taken to the hospital. The details of the officer's condition and injuries have not been confirmed yet.
Homeland Security officials issued a statement indicating the Venezuelan initially escaped law enforcement by vehicle but soon collided with a parked car and fled on foot.
DHS released a statement Wednesday night asserting the officer was attacked during the arrest, and as they struggled on the ground, "two subjects came out of a nearby apartment and also attacked the law enforcement officer with a snow shovel and broom handle."
"Fearing for his life and safety as he was being ambushed by three individuals, the officer fired defensive shots to defend his life," DHS officials stated.
Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche criticised Gov. Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey for inciting violence in a statement released Wednesday night.
"Minnesota insurrection is a direct result of a FAILED governor and a TERRIBLE mayor encouraging violence against law enforcement. It's disgusting," Blanche declared.
"Walz and Frey — I'm focused on stopping YOU from your terrorism by whatever means necessary. This is not a threat. It's a promise."
Shortly before the shooting, Walz addressed the public via a rare primetime speech, urging President Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to "end the occupation" of the state.
The governor also encouraged Minnesotans to capture federal agents' actions on video for future legal proceedings.
