Elon Musk's xAI is under scrutiny from US regulators concerning Grok's creation of unauthorised sexualised images of real people.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta disclosed that his office is probing numerous reports about these images.

"The avalanche of reports detailing the non-consensual, sexually explicit material that xAI has produced and posted online in recent weeks is shocking," Bonta stated.

"This material, which depicts women and children in nude and sexually explicit situations, has been used to harass people across the internet. I urge xAI to take immediate action to ensure this goes no further," he added.

This development follows actions from officials in India, the UK, Indonesia, and Malaysia against Grok.

Notably, Indonesia and Malaysia have even blocked Grok access.

Ofcom, the UK's communications authority, started its investigation earlier this week. Prime Minister Keir Starmer mentioned that X might "forfeit the right to self-regulate."

However, Musk had said previously that anyone asking Grok to produce unlawful content "will face consequences akin to uploading illegal material."

"Obviously, Grok does not spontaneously generate images; it does so only according to user requests," Musk posted on X.

"When asked to generate images, it will refuse to produce anything illegal, as the operating principle for Grok is to obey the laws of any given country or state," the post reads.
