Survey reveals CEO and security executive divide on AI cyber risks

A report published on Friday by business insurer Axis Capital reveals an increasing division among top executives regarding their perspectives on the risks, benefits, and influence of advanced AI technology.

On the flip side, AI is swiftly enhancing cybersecurity defense resources, even as it enables hackers with advanced tactics and introduces new challenges.

"Considering AI, it isn't just a cybersecurity issue. This innovation brings distinctive challenges, responsibilities, and opportunities to both CEOs and boards," stated Axis CEO Vincent Tizzio in an exclusive discussion with CNBC.

Axis conducted a poll involving 250 CEOs and chief information security officers from the US and UK to examine AI's impact on the cyber risk environment.

The findings indicated that while CEOs generally perceive AI as a promoter of productivity and a competitive edge, CISOs are likely to view it as a catalyst for increased vulnerability to dangers like data breaches.

When asked about their confidence in AI enhancing their companies' cybersecurity, 19.5% of CEOs expressed a lack of confidence, compared to 30% of CISOs who felt similarly.

"The speed of AI advancements necessitates a reevaluation of their decisions regarding the tools they are integrating into the company," Tizzio remarked.

The research also pointed out that AI is regarded positively by executives in both US and UK, though UK participants displayed more wariness than their US counterparts.

In contrast to the 85% of US leaders who felt ready for AI threats, only 44% of UK leaders shared that sentiment.
