French Olympic swimmer and champion Yannick Agnel has been charged with rape and sexual assault of a female aged 13 years, who was the daughter of his former coach.

As reported by The Athletic and the associated press, the 33-year-old swimming competitor who claimed two gold medals in the London Olympic Games 2012 will face trial due to the fact that he was arrested on charges of raping the teenager back in 2016, when she was 13 years old.

Agnel was also appealed by his lawyers to have the charges handed to him in May 2025, but the French appeals court rejected the request and ordered the trial to continue, according to the French newspaper Le Monde.

On Thursday, Jan. 15, the office of prosecutor general in Colmar, northeastern France, announced that Agnel was indicted in a criminal court and ordered to stand trial because a criminal court found him an adult when he allegedly committed the acts.

According to AP, Agnel can appeal to the highest court of France, the Court of Cassation within 10 days.

According to the prosecutors, the alleged incidents, in question, occurred between Dec. 31, 2015, and Aug. 31, 2016, in a variety of locations, among which of which were France, Thailand and Spain.

The locations indicated that Agnel was initially arrested on the sexual crimes in December 2021, upon a complaint regarding the alleged offenses in 2016. Agnel acknowledged it at the time, but denied that any coercion was done.
