‘Marty Supreme’ surpasses expectations to become A24’s domestic record-holder
Director Josh Safdie’s frenetic R-rated adventure continues to resonate with audiences
Timothée Chalamet’s latest triumph has taken an unexpected turn. Marty Supreme, the A24 sports dramedy, has officially become the studio’s highest-grossing film in North America, raking in $80 million domestically.
The film, which chronicles the tumultuous journey of fictional ping-pong prodigy Marty Mauser, edged past A24’s previous record-holder, Everything Everywhere All at Once, which earned $77 million in the U.S.
Although Everything Everywhere remains the studio’s top-grossing film globally with $142 million, Marty Supreme has already earned $17 million overseas, bringing its worldwide total to $97 million.
Opening nationwide on Christmas Day, the film earned $27 million during the extended holiday frame.
Now in its fifth weekend, it is projected to add $6.6 million over the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday.
Director Josh Safdie’s frenetic, R-rated adventure continues to resonate with audiences, proving its staying power beyond Chalamet’s star-studded press tour.
At $70 million, Marty Supreme is A24’s most expensive production, making its domestic success crucial.
Beyond box office numbers, the film is gaining critical acclaim: Chalamet won both the Golden Globe and Critics Choice awards for Best Actor, and he is expected to be a strong contender when the Oscar nominations are announced.
For A24, and for Marty Mauser, the gamble has clearly paid off.
