Ohio man convicted of killing innocent Uber driver
83-year-old was arrested over murder and felonious act charges
A 83-year-old has been convicted of killing a 61-year-old Uber driver, whom he mistakenly thought had been a part of a scam on him and this was decided by jurors this week.
The case is based on the events on March 25, 2024, when William J. Brock, a resident of South Charleston, shot Lo-Letha Toland-Hall six times outside his home after phone scammers made fools of both of them and the driver. Brock had been fooled into taking out 12000 dollars believing that the money was required to bail out a relative and was scared that the driver was involved in what he thought was the scheme.
The scam was committed on Toland-Hall, who had been hired via the Uber app to collect a package, and he was not dangerous.
Although Brock defended himself with the argument of self-defense and stated that he felt threatened, the prosecutors emphasized that the driver was not a party to the scheme of committing fraud and was not armed. The jury convicted him of murder, felonious assault and kidnapping.
The case will be sentenced later this week. The prosecutors regretted the fact that both families lost lives and added that the scammers who started the scheme had not been found yet.
