Kim Kardashian breaks silence on viral elephant birkin bag
The accessory sparks backlash after fans believe it is a rare piece made from elephant skin
Kim Kardashian opened up about the controversy over a viral elephant Birkin bag featured on her series All’s Fair.
The 45-year-old fashion mogul confirmed on the January 21 episode of the Khloé in Wonder Land podcast that the bag was a fake Hermès accessory used as a prop for the show.
“I brought a lot of my bags in to film All’s Fair, but then we just got a bunch of other ones to leave on set,” Kim explained.
She added that the hardware and texture made it clear the bag was a knock-off, though she admitted she wished she had been “a little bit smarter” about showcasing it without context.
The accessory had sparked backlash after fans and media believed it was a rare Hermès piece made from elephant skin, a design allegedly created by the brand in the 1980s but never sold.
Kim credited a close friend, Ellen DeGeneres, for influencing her approach to fashion and promoting faux alternatives.
“She is the reason why I went to full faux fur… and I completely toned down a lot of things,” Kim said.
When asked why she hadn’t responded sooner, Kim said she was “overwhelmed” with the negative reactions to All’s Fair, which she executive-produced alongside her team, including her mother, Kris Jenner.
“I’m a firm believer in addressing something head on and quickly,” she added, referencing past controversies like renaming SKIMS from Kimono.
Kim has also continued to showcase her Hermès collection, recently sharing a TikTok video of her birthday presents, including a red crocodile Birkin Shoulder Bag by Jean Paul Gaultier and a beige croc Kelly Cut clutch.
