King Charles’ 1974 Acapulco letter shows he had ‘greatest possible fun’
The monarch serves in both the Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy during the 1970s
King Charles III had “the greatest possible fun” during a 1974 visit to Acapulco, a newly resurfaced handwritten letter reveals.
The letter, penned by the 25-year-old Prince of Wales while serving as a lieutenant aboard HMS Jupiter, was addressed to Colonel Frank Brandstetter, the American hotelier behind the prestigious Las Brisas resort. In it, Charles recounted his stay at the luxury resort, noting the private pools and lively festivities.
“Your party on the last night was the greatest possible fun. I hope we didn’t behave too roughly in the swimming pool or destroy anything as a result,” he wrote.
The correspondence also referenced U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger’s planned honeymoon at the same resort, with Charles wishing him an equally enjoyable visit.
At the time, Charles was midway through his Royal Navy and Royal Air Force service, earning his helicopter pilot qualification and serving aboard HMS Norfolk and HMS Minerva.
He would conclude active naval service in 1976 as commander of HMS Bronington.
The letter, expected to fetch around £300, is set to go under the hammer at RR Auction on February 12.
