Family of ICU nurse killed by federal agents disputes DHS shooting narrative
Alex Pretti aspired to 'make a difference in this world' before his tragic shooting on January 24
The family of Alex Pretti, the individual who was shot and killed by federal officers in Minneapolis, has voiced their opinions, countering allegations made about the ICU nurse.
In a statement obtained by CNN, Pretti's family began, "We are deeply saddened and extremely angry."
"Alex was a kindhearted soul who cared deeply for his family and friends, and also the American veterans whom he cared for as an ICU nurse at the Minneapolis VA hospital," they continued. "Alex wanted to make a difference in this world. Unfortunately, he will not be with us to see his impact."
Pretti's family then revealed additional information about his final moments, suggesting he might have been trying to "protect a woman" before being fatally shot.
The family next criticised the US's leadership under President Donald Trump, stating in their comments, "The horrific untruths told about our son by the administration are both shameful and appalling."
Tricia McLaughlin, the assistant secretary for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), asserted in a statement to PEOPLE that Pretti "approached" US Border Patrol officers while armed with a firearm and "forcefully resisted" as they attempted to neutralise him.
She mentioned an officer then initiated "defensive actions." Pretti was 37.
During a press conference following the shooting, Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara was questioned regarding the DHS' account of the situation.
He referred to the visual evidence from the scene, asserting, "The footage speaks for itself."
Pretti's family also challenged the DHS' account, writing in their statement, "Alex is clearly unarmed when attacked by Trump’s aggressive and cowardly ICE agents."
At least 200 demonstrators gathered near the shooting site shortly thereafter, The Associated Press reported, leading to clashes between federal agencies and residents.
