A University of Michigan student was found dead after going missing amid extreme winter weather.

Lucas Mattson, 19, was discovered at 12:05 p.m. on Saturday, January 24, a day after he was last seen at 1 a.m. on January 23. Police said the engineering sophomore had been “walking alone … without a coat” before he was reported missing.

Authorities described the search as a nearly 20-hour effort conducted in frigid conditions, involving the Ann Arbor Police Department, University of Michigan Division of Public Safety and Security, and the University of Michigan Police Department Drone Unit.

Police confirmed that Mattson’s body showed “no obvious signs of trauma,” and foul play is not suspected. The Washtenaw County Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct a post-mortem to determine the cause of death.

The university expressed condolences, saying in a statement, “Our hearts are with Lucas’s family, friends, and all those who knew and loved him during this incredibly difficult time.”

Crisis support resources remain available to students through Wolverine Wellness, University Health Service, and Counseling and Psychological Services.
