At least 11 people have died, and another 12 were injured following a mass shooting in Mexico.

On Sunday, (January 25), during a soccer match in Salamanca, Guanajuato, gunmen fired shots, resulting in ten immediate fatalities, with another person passing away later in the hospital, according to national publications Excelsior and El Universal referencing Mayor César Prieto Gallardo.

"Furthermore, 12 individuals were shot and are being treated medically," mentioned the authorities, as cited by El Universal.

In a video shared via social media, Prieto Gallardo disclosed that those hurt in the "disturbing and cowardly" assault included a woman and a child, as reported by Reuters.

"This tragic event adds to the troubling violence our state, especially Salamanca, is facing," he commented, according to the outlet. "Criminal gangs aim to undermine the authorities, but they will not succeed."

An investigation was "promptly" initiated following the shooting, as reported in Excelsior

The Guanajuato State Attorney General's Office (FGE) collaborates with federal entities to gather evidence and enhance security protocols.

"Justice will prevail, and the perpetrators will be caught," Prieto Gallardo stated, as reported by Reuters.

Salamanca's government has expressed its sympathy for the victims' families in a statement and committed to enhancing community safety in Las Flores.

Although there has been a decline in violence over the past year, Guanajuato remains the leading Mexican state in homicide numbers, as reported by El País.

"The Salamanca Municipal Government strongly denounces the recent violent events in both the municipality and the state, including the incident on Sunday at the Loma de Flores soccer field," stated the municipal authorities, as reported by the outlet.

The authorities added, "Salamanca extends deep sympathy to the affected families and pledges to relentlessly work towards safeguarding and ensuring peace for our community."
