An Indiana man has been sentenced to 55 years in prison following the senseless killing of a grandfather over a collection of gold coins.

Chavez Gustin, 22, pleaded guilty to felony murder earlier this month, after a plea deal saw additional charges of murder and burglary dropped.

The conviction follows the tragic death of 67-year-old Roger Swedzinski, who was found shot in his Fort Wayne home in July 2025.

The investigation revealed that Mr Swedzinski had been attempting to sell several American Eagle gold coins on Facebook Marketplace for $4,400.

Following the shooting, authorities discovered his basement safe forced open and his valuables scattered.

Just two days later, CCTV footage captured Gustin at a local pawn shop, where he was seen exchanging the stolen coins for a solid gold bar.

Beyond the courtroom details, the loss has devastated a family who remember Mr Swedzinski as a man of warmth and humour.

His online obituary paints a picture of a devoted family man: "As a grandfather, Roger embraced his role with joy and enthusiasm," the tribute reads.

"Known for being a goofy grandpa, he was always ready with a new loud toy or a fun ice cream outing. His grandchildren were his greatest treasures, and he cherished every moment spent with them."

While the 55-year sentence offers some legal closure, it cannot replace the "goofy grandpa" whose life was cut short for a handful of coins.

Gustin’s cold attempt to trade his victim's treasures for a gold bar remains a chilling footnote to a heartbreaking crime.
