Elon Musk is at the helm of some of the world's top companies. Yet, they've been interacting well before the latest merger whispers about "Elon Inc."

The billionaire is at the forefront of five significant companies: Tesla, SpaceX, Boring Company, Neuralink, and xAI, which recently brought in his social platform, X (formerly Twitter).

In the past three years, these companies have heightened their collaboration, purchasing each other's goods, swapping software and materials, and announcing significant investments.

This cultivates a closely connected corporate network centered around Musk.

"When managed appropriately, connections between companies are sensible," Lou Whiteman, a contributing analyst at The Motley Fool, told Business Insider. "It's crucial to ensure there's good governance in place, like making sure Boring pays a fair rate for Tesla's vehicles."

Some analysts and investors believe this setup gives Musk too much control. Tesla's board has eight members, including Musk allies—among them, his brother.

None of Musk's businesses responded to Business Insider's requests for comments.

Here are some notable collaborations, purchases, and investments among Musk's enterprises:

Musk frequently taps into the workforce from one of his companies to assist another within his collection.

In 2022, around a month following Musk's purchase of Twitter, he relocated roughly 50 Tesla employees to the social media company's headquarters for assistance in revamping its code review systems, as court documents reveal.

Musk later asserted in court that the Tesla staff "volunteered" for this task and that such a temporary shift shouldn't be a concern for Tesla's board.

Leadership roles often span multiple companies under Musk, supported by organisational charts from Business Insider.

For instance, Charlie Kuehmann holds the position of vice president of materials and engineering at both Tesla and SpaceX.
