A young child has been miraculously pulled unharmed from the wreckage of a California home after a car ploughed into the building at high speed.

The terrifying incident occurred in Fairfield at approximately 6:24 pm on Saturday, leaving a two-storey residence with "clear structural damage" and buried in heavy debris.

Emergency dispatchers were told the vehicle had been "traveling at a high rate of speed before it drove first through a back fence, and then into the back of the residence."

Upon arrival, the Fairfield Fire Department found the driver, 23-year-old Matthew Salagubang, trapped inside his car, which was wedged deep within the home's structure.

Simultaneously, rescuers discovered a child inside the house who had become pinned beneath falling wreckage.

In a display of incredible luck, no major injuries were reported. Firefighters worked together to secure the unstable building while carefully removing the child and the driver from the scene.

Salagubang was transported to a local hospital for medical assistance but was subsequently arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Photographs released by the Fairfield Police Department show the scale of the destruction, with first responders swarming the house to prevent further collapse.

While the child's age has not been disclosed, the community is breathing a sigh of relief that a situation which looked so "disastrous" ended without loss of life.

Salagubang now faces legal consequences as the investigation into the crash continues.
