OpenAI has launched a new desktop app for its coding assistant Codex as it looks to strengthen its position in the increasingly competitive AI code-generation market.

The move is aimed at helping the company gain momentum—and customers—against rivals that have surged ahead in recent months.

According to OpenAI, the Codex app is designed to allow users to manage multiple AI agents at the same time, enabling long-running coding tasks to be handled more efficiently.

During a briefing with reporters, company officials said the app can also execute code to gather, process, and analyse information, expanding its usefulness beyond basic programming assistance.

AI-powered coding has emerged as one of the most successful and commercially viable uses of large language models.

As a result, coding tools have become a key battleground for AI companies seeking to attract enterprise customers, intensifying competition across the sector.

OpenAI currently trails some of its competitors, particularly AI startup Anthropic, which has gained significant traction with its Claude Code tool.

Anthropic has said Claude Code reached an annualized revenue run rate of $1 billion within six months of its public launch, underscoring the growing demand for AI coding solutions.

The release of the Codex app marks part of OpenAI’s renewed push to close that gap.

The company said it has focused heavily on usability, aiming to make advanced coding capabilities more accessible to a broader audience.
