New survey reveals changing views on blue-collar work amid AI advancements

Americans feel optimistic about their influence over future employment.

A survey organised by the Business for Good Foundation, an organisation committed to narrowing the wealth gap, found that 75% of Americans believe "practical skills and experience are more crucial than formal education for career success."

"Many feel the American dream is inaccessible to them," Ed Mitzen, cofounder of the Business for Good Foundation, shared with Business Insider before the survey's results were revealed. "I would argue that it's not lost; it's just shifted to places we often overlook."

The study, conducted by The Harris Poll, coincides with leading AI figures anticipating a surge in blue-collar opportunities as AI reshapes, and sometimes replaces, white-collar roles.

Additionally, the survey found that 76% of participants agree with the statement that "jobs relying on practical experience are less susceptible to AI replacement."

In general, three in four individuals agreed that their concept of a "good" job today differs from five years ago.

Moreover, 78% concurred that "the stigma around trade or blue-collar work is diminishing" as society emphasises practical skills.

Researchers have determined that professions requiring interpersonal skills and physical presence are less likely to be replaced by AI.

Indeed's GenAI Skill Transformation Index recently explored how generative AI might take on roles demanding problem-solving abilities and physical tasks.

They concluded that fields like nursing, childcare, and construction are least likely to experience AI disruption.
