Elon Musk and former X CEO Linda Yaccarino have been called for an inquiry in France following a search of the platform’s French offices by a police cybercrime unit on Tuesday.

The Paris Prosecutor released a statement on X (formerly Twitter), mentioning the search was conducted by national cyber officers alongside Europol as part of an investigation initiated in January 2025.

The investigation was prompted by a report from French politician Éric Bothorel in January 2025, highlighting concerns about the platform’s algorithms and their impact on automated data processing systems.

The Paris Prosecutor’s office announced on Tuesday that this investigation had been broadened due to newer complaints concerning content developed by X’s AI tool Grok.

“The scope of the investigation has widened following additional reports criticizing Grok’s functionality on the X platform, which resulted in the spread of Holocaust denial content and explicit deepfakes,” it stated.

The Paris Prosecutor indicated that X’s owner Musk and Yaccarino have been invited to public hearings in Paris on April 20 to discuss the raised issues and any corrective measures adopted for the flagged algorithm and Grok-related content concerns.

Employees of X in France have also been called upon to attend the hearings, from April 20 to 24, to provide testimonies as witnesses.

Musk's contentious social media platform faces multiple investigations across Europe.

Last month, the European Commission announced its collaboration with the attorney general of California and UK regulator Ofcom to probe into X’s AI tool Grok and its involvement in creating sexualised imagery.
