A month-long investigation into a holiday-season domestic dispute has culminated in a first-degree murder charge for Bill Stevenson, the former husband of Jill Biden.

Stevenson was arrested on Monday following a grand jury indictment that alleges he "intentionally caused the death" of his wife, 64-year-old Linda Stevenson.

The incident occurred on December 28, 2025, when police were called to the couple's home in Wilmington, Delaware's Oak Hill neighbourhood.

The case gained public traction weeks before the indictment due to a bizarre discrepancy in Linda’s published obituary.

Despite being married to Bill for roughly 40 years, the tribute listed her daughter, granddaughter, and sister as survivors, omitting Bill's name entirely.

This led to frantic social media speculation, with one user openly asking on Bill’s Facebook page if the omission was a "misprint." That post was later deleted, but it foreshadowed the legal storm to follow.

Bill Stevenson is a well-known figure in the Delaware community, primarily as the founder of the Stone Balloon, a famous Newark venue that hosted acts like Bruce Springsteen.

He was married to then-Jill Tracy Jacobs from 1970 to 1975. In recent years, Stevenson had been vocal in the media about his contentious divorce from the former First Lady.

Following his arraignment, he was committed to the Howard Young Correctional Institution after failing to post a $500,000 cash bail. A spokesperson for the Bidens has stated they will not be commenting on the matter.
