How to satisfy your sweet tooth without metabolic hangover
Greek yoghurt and dark chocolate combine to protect both the gut and the liver
To avoid the metabolic slump often caused by traditional ice cream, a US-based gastroenterologist has shared his secret for a guilt-free late-night treat.
On Wednesday, Dr Joseph Salhab took to Instagram to showcase a high-protein yoghurt bowl that prioritises both gut health and the liver without exceeding 500 calories.
Originally developed by creator Jack Early, the recipe is a masterclass in 'functional' eating—selecting ingredients that feel like a luxury but work hard for the body.
Dr Salhab explained that the dessert is a precise balance of macros for metabolic wellness: “High-protein yoghurt bowl calories and macros: 495 calories — 40g protein / 14g fat / 58g carbs.”
The magic lies in the ingredients. Greek yoghurt provides a hefty dose of probiotics, while bananas—pan-seared with honey—offer prebiotic fibres to nourish gut bacteria.
Walnuts contribute anti-inflammatory omega-3s, and dark chocolate provides antioxidants for liver support. A dash of cinnamon ties it together by protecting the gut lining and balancing blood sugar.
To make it, stir vanilla into 200g of yoghurt. Caramelise 110g of sliced bananas in a pan with 15g of honey and cinnamon until golden.
Top the cool yoghurt with the warm fruit, 15g of walnuts, and 10g of dark chocolate chips.
Dr Salhab remains a firm fan of the dish, noting, “Honestly, this is one of the best things that I've had. It uses all gut and liver-friendly ingredients... you're definitely going to enjoy this.”
