Some cancers can remain symptomless in the early stages, and delayed detection often reduces treatment success. On World Cancer Day 2026, Dr. Amit Jain, Pediatric Haematologist-Oncologist and BMT Physician at P. D. Hinduja Hospital & Medical Research Centre, highlighted essential screenings for different age groups.

“In India, nearly 60-70% of cancer cases are diagnosed in late stages, significantly reducing survival rates,” Dr. Jain explained. "Systematic screening is the only way to catch 'silent' malignancies when they are most curable."

He emphasized that screening should not be feared but seen as a proactive step toward long-term health: "Screening is not about fear, it’s about staying ahead of disease and protecting long-term health.”

Dr. Jain’s recommended age-wise screenings include:

1. Cervical Cancer (25–65): HPV DNA testing every 5 years or Pap smear every 3 years.

2. Oral Cancer (30+): Annual clinical oral examination, especially for tobacco or betel nut users.

3. Breast Cancer (40+): Annual mammogram; ultrasound or MRI for high-risk women.

4. Colorectal Cancer (45+): Colonoscopy every 10 years or yearly FIT/Faecal test.

5. Lung Cancer (50+): Annual Low-Dose CT scan for heavy smokers.

Early detection through these screenings can significantly improve outcomes and long-term health. World Cancer Day 2026 serves as a reminder that timely awareness and action are key to fighting cancer.
