Teen killing: How a passion for slasher movies turned into real-life horror
Cassie Jo Stoddart tragically fell victim to a notorious crime while housesitting for relatives
In September 2006, Cassie Jo Stoddart, 16, was taking care of her relatives' house in Pocatello, Idaho, when she was tragically found stabbed to death.
This murder stunned the tight-knit community and left law enforcement in search of explanations.
The police retraced her last hours, honing in on the final three individuals who saw her alive: her boyfriend Matt, who was ultimately exonerated, and classmates Brian Draper and Torey Adamcik.
The case took a new direction upon the discovery of a buried videotape that presented disturbing questions about the involvement of the two teenagers and whether the event was actually filmed.
The investigation and its far-reaching consequences are explored in an ABC News Studios series, The Scream Murder: A True Teen Horror Story, debuting Wednesday (February 11) on Hulu.
This three-part series examines the "capture, trial, and sentencing of Brian and Torey, two young men driven by an obsession with horror movies, especially the 1996 slasher film Scream, to enact their own horror scenario — targeting a fellow student, setting the scene, and committing the act," a press statement explains.
In August 2007, Adamcik and Draper were convicted of first-degree murder and given life imprisonment sentences without parole, plus 30 years to life for the conspiracy to commit murder, according to the Associated Press.
The series features fresh interviews from prison with both Adamcik and Draper, rare footage of their interrogations by police, and looks into the impact on Cassie’s family and the families of the perpetrators.
