Justin Bieber shocked Grammy Awards organizers when he walked onstage in nothing but satin boxer shorts and socks, revealing a bold performance choice he hadn’t cleared with bosses.

The 31-year-old pop star performed at the 2026 Grammys at Los Angeles’ Crypto.com Arena on Sunday night (Feb. 1), leaving the audience stunned with his near-naked stage look.

The boxer shorts, designed by Bieber’s fashion brand SKYLRK, were paired with simple socks, marking a stark departure from typical red carpet glamor.

Grammy executive producer Ben Winston told Rolling Stone Music Now that Bieber hadn’t finalized the outfit until he stepped onto the stage.

“He's not even really going: ‘This is what I'm going to do.’ When we reached out to him about his creative, he was just like, ‘I’m just going to get on stage and sing,’” Winston explained.

Despite minimal rehearsal—taking only 15 minutes of his allotted 90—Bieber’s performance went off without a hitch.

“It was brilliant. We are seven minutes into his hour-and-a-half rehearsal, and he goes, ‘How’d it look to you? You happy with it?’ And I was like, ‘Oh my God. It looked beautiful. I loved it.’” Winston added, noting that the performance was a “career-defining moment” and “so different from what we’ve seen over the years.”

The Grammys also saw a notable mishap when Cher mistakenly announced Luther Vandross as the winner of Record of the Year—a poignant error, as Vandross passed away in 2005.

The Believe singer quickly corrected herself, awarding the award to the actual winner, Kendrick Lamar, for his collaboration with SZA on Luther.

Winston said Cher was fully briefed beforehand and was “happy” with her on-stage presenting.

“If I could go back in time, I’d want that to happen again,” he remarked, calling the moment a bit of an “anarchy” that added to the night’s energy.
