Dove Cameron opens up about the emotional toll of filming intimate scenes in '56 Days'
The '56 Days' premieres Feb. 18 on Prime Video
Dove Cameron has opened up about feeling unprepared for the emotional vulnerability that came with filming bold scenes for Prime Video’s upcoming psychological thriller 56 Days.
The actress and singer, 30, stars opposite Avan Jogia in the series and has admitted she initially agreed to the nudity without fully grasping the impact it would have on her.
Speaking to Allure, Cameron said she was eager to challenge herself when she signed on to the project.
“When this project came around, I was at a time in my life where I wanted to challenge myself,” she explained. “I read the script, realized there was nudity required, and I blindly was like, ‘F--- yeah. I’m not scared. I’m ready to go. I’m an adult.’ I just didn’t anticipate that it would be so vulnerable.”
Looking back, Cameron said her reaction now feels “silly,” adding, “How could I have not thought that it would be so vulnerable?”
She recalled growing up watching other actresses perform nude scenes and assuming it would feel natural when her turn came.
“I always thought nudity was beautiful and artistic and something to be celebrated,” she said. “I thought I felt that way about myself.”
However, the experience revealed lingering internalized shame she didn’t realize she carried. “I didn’t realize how much internalized shame I had until I did this,” Cameron admitted, noting that the challenge wasn’t the set environment but “being witnessed by someone who is not your significant other in such a vulnerable way.”
Despite the difficulty, the experience ultimately proved freeing. Cameron said it helped her feel “less crumpled and hidden” and more capable of celebrating herself the same way she celebrates other women.
Her fiancé, Måneskin frontman Damiano David, also played a key role in helping her shed that discomfort.
Cameron previously shared that his reassurance during a break in filming helped her confront and release her fears around nudity, calling the moment an important step in her personal growth.
In 56 Days, Cameron plays Ciara, while Jogia portrays Oliver — a couple who fall in love quickly before their relationship takes a dark and dangerous turn. The series follows a murder investigation that unravels the twisted trajectory of their intense affair.
