Jacob Elordi practices northern accent in the bath for 'Wuthering Heights'
'Wuthering Heights' hits cinemas on February 13, just in time for Valentine’s Day
Jacob Elordi has revealed his unusual method for mastering a Northern English accent: practicing repeatedly in the bath.
The 28-year-old Australian actor, who stars as Heathcliff in Emerald Fennell’s upcoming Wuthering Heights, told BBC News, “I just practise it in the bath, over and over and over.”
Elordi spelled out his pronunciation preferences, saying he favors “meks and teks” instead of “take.” He stars alongside fellow Aussie Margot Robbie, who plays Catherine Earnshaw in this bold adaptation of Emily Brontë’s classic novel set on the Yorkshire moors.
The film has already stirred conversation due to its casting choices and provocative content, including BDSM-inspired scenes.
Despite this, anticipation remains high, with fans braving rainy London for the premiere at Leicester Square, where the red carpet was charcoal black to match the gothic tone of the movie.
Robbie dazzled in a corseted Gothic gown and a replica of Charlotte Brontë’s bracelet, while Elordi posed for selfies with fans and even confirmed he left flowers in Robbie’s dressing room on Valentine’s Day. “Yes,” he told BBC News.
Charli XCX, who contributed music for the film, also attended the premiere, describing the experience as “really, really fun” and a chance to work on “polar opposites” of her previous music style.
The film follows the dark and passionate love story of Catherine and Heathcliff, with themes of desire, obsession, and revenge.
While some have raised concerns about Robbie’s age and Elordi’s casting, Fennell defended the choices as part of her distinct vision for the story.
Early reactions on social media praise the adaptation, calling it “a rip-roaring, bodice-ripping crowd-pleaser” that captures “the breathtaking ache and essence of desire.” Robbie added, “It’s emotional more than anything. It’s very romantic. It’s very epic. It’s like large-scale filmmaking, very cinematic.”
