A California Uber driver has been convicted of sexual battery after a harrowing incident involving a university student.

Safiullah Miakhil, 46, was found guilty by a Yolo County jury following a trial that detailed a traumatic encounter on 1 November 2023.

The victim, a student at the University of California, Davis, had booked a ride home from a Halloween party just after midnight.

Upon arriving at her destination, Miakhil exited the driver’s seat and climbed into the back with the woman. He proceeded to grope, kiss, and fondle her against her will.

Fortunately, she managed to break free and flee, reporting the assault to the police immediately. Yolo County Deputy District Attorney Stefanie DeCillis highlighted the survivor's strength, stating: “The young woman who was victimized in this case demonstrated immeasurable courage and tenacity... especially in testifying at trial about such a traumatic event.”

District Attorney Jeff Reisig described the conviction as an affirmation for the victim and a "warning to the depraved."

He added: “The jury’s conviction is an affirmation to the courageous young victim in this case and a warning to the depraved who dare to think that they will get away with such perverse misconduct.”

Miakhil now faces a maximum sentence of one year in county jail. Officials have used this case to urge the public to exercise caution when using rideshare services.

The verdict sends a clear message that such predatory behaviour will be met with the full force of the law to protect those in vulnerable positions.
