Expert reveals healthiest sugar substitute for your morning tea
Reducing sugar intake to below five per cent offers major neurological benefits
In a nation where the morning ritual of chai and biscuits is sacred, many Indians are unknowingly over-consuming sugar.
To address rising health fears, Dr Sudhir Kumar, a neurologist at Apollo Hospitals, Hyderabad, has identified the ultimate alternative: Stevia.
Derived from a South American plant, this natural sweetener offers the taste people crave without the physiological damage caused by refined sugar.
Talking to X, Dr Kumar outlined why this plant extract wins the top spot. He noted: "The answer is: Stevia. Why is it the healthiest? Zero calories. Does not raise blood sugar or insulin. Safe for diabetics. No effect on teeth. Very small amounts needed. Safe for daily use, such as with tea or coffee."
Recognising the cultural bond with sweet drinks, he added: "I like to have my tea and coffee without a sweetener; but I know there are people who can't have un-sweetened tea/coffee."
For those seeking variety, Dr Kumar also gave a nod to monk fruit, though he cautioned: "Monk fruit is also good (may be more expensive though)."
His advice aligns with World Health Organization guidelines, which suggest limiting free sugars to under 25g daily to prevent obesity and type 2 diabetes.
Because stevia is intensely sweet, only a tiny amount is required to replace a heaped teaspoon of sugar.
For millions struggling to quit sugar "cold turkey," this simple swap provides a human, manageable way to protect their neurological and metabolic health without sacrificing the simple joy of a hot cuppa.
