Jeff Bezos, the owner of The Washington Post, released his first public remarks following the paper's enacted extensive layoffs recently. His comments centered around using "data" to learn about reader preferences.

The billionaire behind Amazon, renowned for building one of the globe's most esteemed businesses with an unwavering focus on customer satisfaction, expressed his desire to see a similar approach at the Post.

"The Post has an essential journalistic mission and a significant opportunity," stated Bezos. "Our readers show us the path to success every day. The data informs us what is worthwhile and where to aim our resources."

Bezos made his statement as Post CEO Will Lewis declared his resignation, with Post CFO Jeff D'Onofrio stepping in as interim CEO.

In his own message, D'Onofrio mentioned, "customer data will shape our strategies, enhancing how we deliver what our audience values most."

Comments made by Bezos and D'Onofrio mirrored those of the paper's lead editor, Matt Murray, as he addressed the staff earlier this week.

"Today is all about repositioning ourselves to be indispensable in people's lives amidst an increasingly crowded, competitive, and complex media environment," Murray expressed during a staff meeting on Wednesday. "We've lingered on outdated structures, clinging to a time when we were practically a monopolistic local newspaper."

After the job cuts, Murray frequently spoke about emphasizing reader interests and comprehending audience data during an appearance on the Puck podcast "The Grill Room."

He felt that upon taking his role, the company hadn't "embraced the digital revolution of the internet adequately."

He mentioned the organisation had significant progress to make in utilizing data — data to guide writing, data to define publishing strategy, data to gain insights on the audience, data to recognise reader demographics, and data to pinpoint potential audiences."
