After a tumultuous period as the head of The Washington Post, Will Lewis is leaving his position following major layoffs this week.

Taking up the role of interim CEO and publisher is Jeff D’Onofrio, who previously led Tumblr between 2017 and 2022.

D’Onofrio has been serving as the CFO at the Post since June of last year, providing him a firsthand view of Jeff Bezos' transformations of the historical publication over the past nine months.

D’Onofrio’s career history lacks substantial experience in traditional news sectors and doesn't boast many remarkable success stories.

He was briefly the general manager at Yahoo News while it was under Verizon before he wholly concentrated on Tumblr.

Under his guidance, Tumblr attempted to revamp its image by prohibiting adult content, leading to a 30 percent drop in traffic.

Yahoo had initially acquired Tumblr for $1.1 billion in 2013. However, by 2019, it was sold to Automatic, the company behind WordPress, reportedly for under $3 million.
