The hydration trap: Why your weekend coffee and salt are draining you
Homemade electrolyte water is often more effective than sugary sports drinks
Weekends are rarely as restful as we hope. Between social gatherings, chores, and short trips, our regular routines vanish—and our hydration usually goes with them.
Unlike the structured work week, Saturdays and Sundays often involve more coffee, alcohol, and salty treats, all of which leave the body parched.
By Monday morning, that sluggish, tired feeling isn't always just a lack of sleep; it is often mild dehydration that plain water cannot quite fix.
Dr Alessia Roehnelt, a New Jersey-based endocrinologist, suggests a more strategic approach to re-energising. In a recent update, she explained that plain water can sometimes move through the system too fast to be useful.
To truly hydrate, the body needs a specific balance. “Start by combining some mineral salt, like Celtic and Himalayan.
"Add a little bit of either lemon juice, a little bit of honey or even both. Fill the rest with water, and you have just created the perfect electrolyte drink,” she shared the recipe.
The magic lies in the chemistry. Salt requires a tiny amount of glucose to be absorbed properly; together, they act as a key that unlocks the cells to let water in.
This process ensures longer-lasting hydration compared to standard bottled water. Dr Roehnelt notes that this simple kitchen concoction can be more effective than many store-bought alternatives.
By replenishing lost minerals and fluids more efficiently, this DIY drink provides the perfect internal "reset," helping you shake off the weekend fog and start your week feeling truly refreshed.
