A baby just shy of a year old from New Mexico was found deceased a few hours after being declared missing.

On Monday (February 9), the San Juan County Sheriff's Office announced in a a Facebook post that the infant’s body was discovered shortly before 10am local time.

Officials mentioned they were notified about the child's disappearance near Flora Vista on Sunday evening and a search was launched "right away."

A spokesperson from the San Juan County Sheriff's Office indicated to local news outlet KRQE that the child's mother reported them missing.

The infant's body was later found in a remote area, the spokesperson elaborated, as reported by the outlet.

“We recognise how distressing this is for our community,” stated Sheriff Shane Ferrari. “Our team is tirelessly gathering evidence to determine the circumstances leading to this child’s death. The public is not at risk.”

The sheriff’s office expressed being “deeply saddened by the loss of such a young life in our area. Our sympathies and prayers are extended to the child’s family.”

"We are committed to investigating this matter thoroughly, ensuring justice is served. We humbly request that the family’s privacy is respected during their time of mourning,” they added.

As per KRQE, officials are treating the case as a homicide investigation. No individuals have been identified as suspects.
