T-Mobile offers app-free live voice call translation
T-Mobile to test AI feature that offers live phone call translations in over 50 languages
T-Mobile is set to experiment with an innovative AI tool that translates real-time phone conversations into over 50 languages.
Live Translation will debut in beta “this Spring,” according to a press release, and registration for qualified T-Mobile customers is open starting now.
“One of the main challenges for wireless users are often the simplest — such as being able to comprehend each other,” remarked T-Mobile CEO Srini Gopalan.
“Incorporating real-time AI directly into our network allows us to offer more than just connectivity — we’re fostering community, beginning with Live Translation.”
By integrating it at the network level, users won’t need specific apps or devices to utilise the service.
The only condition is that translation must be initiated by a T-Mobile network subscriber.
The feature will be supported on the carrier’s 5G Advanced network, but T-Mobile president John Saw mentioned to The Verge that Live Translation functions over both 4G LTE and 5G:
“The essential factor is a Voice over LTE (VoLTE) connection, which permits the service to smoothly operate across various devices and network conditions,” stated Saw. “This adaptability is crucial because it guarantees Live Translation operates for customers wherever they might be, not just on the latest network technology. Live Translation is compatible with VoLTE, VoNR, and VoWiFi.”
T-Mobile claims beta testers can activate Live Translation “for as long as they need” by dialing 87, with no extra charge during the beta phase.
T-Mobile has not confirmed whether Live Translation will have a fee once it is made widely available later this year.
Beta users will also have the option to activate Live Translation by saying “Hey T-Mobile” later this spring.
It’s important to note that this feature only functions during an ongoing call, and T-Mobile will not retain call recordings or transcripts. “
