James Van Der Beek's Dawson's Creek colleague, Katie Holmes, has expressed her condolences following his passing on Wednesday (February 11), at the age of 48.

In an emotional, handwritten note posted to Instagram, Holmes described the actor's passing as "hard to grasp" and penned her tribute with a "heavy heart."

"I am thankful for being part of James’ journey. He was dearly loved. Kimberly, our support is with you and your wonderful children," the mother of one, 47, stated in her post, mentioning the actor's family.

Her sentiment began by focusing on the actor, who brought the character Dawson Leery to life in Dawson's Creek between 1998 and 2003.

"James, thank you. Engaging with your creativity was truly special — sharing the creative realm and safeguarding our hearts' expression."

She went on to say, "These are treasured memories, filled with laughter, life discussions, James Taylor melodies — adventures from an extraordinary youth."

Holmes highlighted some of Van Der Beek's remarkable traits, such as "kindness, courage, selflessness, and resilience."

"Championing a life where existence is art — nurturing a meaningful marriage, raising six loving children — a journey fit for a hero," she remarked.

Holmes added that she mourns Van Der Beek's passing "with an awareness of his absence and immense appreciation for his influence."

The actress concluded by addressing her departed colleague's wife, Kimberly Van Der Beek, and the six children they shared.

"Our support is unwavering," she expressed. "And we shall always provide you with love and kindness."

Van Der Beek had been diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer in 2023, sharing the news with the public the following year.
