OpenAI announced today — for the final time — that it is retiring GPT-4o. For some, it's akin to getting broken up with the day before Valentine's Day.

Numerous ChatGPT users have formed a deep connection to 4o, known for its occasionally sycophantic chat style.

Those who depended on it for emotional support and as a creative ally have called it a "crucial accessibility tool."

OpenAI initially attempted to discontinue the model in August, but reversed its decision within a day due to substantial pushback.

The company gave users additional notice in January, but — it's clear — time hasn't softened the blow. The backlash has reignited.

"Rot in hell," one user commented on X in response to OpenAI's statement on Thursday.

"Are you going to provide bereavement leave from our jobs?" another questioned.

Fidji Simo, OpenAI's Applications CEO, noted earlier this week that these intense 4o connections signal the beginning of a new age — where people build AI relationships.

"Humans are naturally inclined to become attached to smart entities," she mentioned to Alex Heath on his Access podcast. "And AI is advancing in intelligence."

These interactions can become ethically complex, however, when users seek advice like "Should I separate from my spouse?" Simo explained that newer models incorporate barriers to avert "harmful attachments." She indicated that newer versions would remind users it's "not their role" to decide on personal matters but rather guide through the pros and cons.

OpenAI noted that only 0.1% of its audience actively used 4o.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman also remarked on users’ strong attachment to 4o's accommodating responses.

"As we've been implementing changes and engaging with users about it, it’s heart-wrenching to hear users plead, 'Can I please have it back? I've never had anyone in my life affirm me. No parent ever applauded my efforts," Altman reflected on the "Huge Conversations" podcast in August following OpenAI's initial attempt to discontinue 4o.

Previously, Altman admitted 4o's manner was "overly accommodating and bothersome," and solutions were imminent.
