Vietnam has granted SpaceX approval to operate its Starlink satellite internet service in the country, according to state media reports on Saturday.

The Ministry of Science and Technology issued a license allowing Starlink’s local unit to provide both fixed and mobile satellite internet services, as well as permission to use radio frequencies and equipment.

The timing of the approval comes ahead of an expected visit by Vietnam’s top leader, To Lam, to the United States next week.

During the trip, To Lam is set to attend the inaugural meeting of US President Donald Trump’s Board of Peace initiative, which focuses on addressing global conflicts.

Last year, Vietnam had permitted SpaceX to operate Starlink on a trial basis, but it was unclear when the service would officially launch.

The approval arrives amid ongoing US–Vietnam trade negotiations following Washington’s imposition of a 20% tariff on Vietnamese goods in August 2025.

The sixth round of talks concluded earlier this month, but no agreement has been made public.
