Amanda Askell, the Scottish philosopher at the heart of Anthropic’s mission, is the architect of Claude’s moral framework.

Her task is as delicate as it is profound: imbuing an artificial intelligence with a personality that balances safety with helpfulness. However, this high-stakes role recently drew the ire of Elon Musk.

Reacting to a profile of Askell, Musk questioned her authority to shape the future of AI. "Those without children lack a stake in the future," he posted on X, echoing his well-known pronatalist views.

Musk, who has 14 children, suggested that biological parenthood is a prerequisite for long-term investment in humanity.

Askell met the criticism with a calm, intellectual rebuttal. "I think it depends on how much you care about people in general vs. your own kin," she replied.

While she noted her own intention to have children, she argued that her commitment to human thriving extends far beyond genetic ties.

She later reflected on the broader social pressure to conform to political extremes, noting: "I'm too right wing for the left and I'm too left wing for the right... What I'm learning is that failing to polarize is itself quite polarizing."

As the lead for personality alignment, Askell continues to refine the 30,000-word "constitution" that guides Claude’s behaviour.

Her work suggests that a "stake in the future" might not be measured by the size of one’s family, but by the depth of one’s empathy for a world yet to be built.
