While a daily spritz of perfume is a ritual for millions, experts are warning that many designer scents contain "endocrine-disrupting chemicals" linked to serious health issues.

A Mail on Sunday investigation into ten of Britain’s most popular fragrances—including Chanel No.5 and Dior Sauvage—found that every single one contained ingredients studied for potential hormone-disrupting effects.

These compounds can mimic or block natural hormones, with research linking them to infertility, obesity, and even cancer.

Campaigners are particularly worried about the thyroid, as perfumes are often sprayed directly onto the thin skin of the neck.

Chloe Topping of The Chem Trust warned: “‘Our hormones are critical for our health – they run everything in the body from our reproductive system to our metabolism to our sleep pattern and weight.’” She noted that UK regulation is currently “significantly lagging” behind Europe.

The investigation revealed that Armani’s Si contains chemicals linked to breast cancer risk in 2009, while Marc Jacobs’ Perfect includes a substance associated with reduced fertility.

Although these ingredients are currently legal at regulated limits, doctors report a rise in "sub-clinical" hormonal imbalances.

Allie Carson-McGeary, a 29-year-old thyroid cancer survivor with no family history of the disease, believes her extensive perfume collection may have played a role.

To reduce risk, experts suggest spraying scent on clothes rather than skin and avoiding products that simply list "fragrance" without confirming they are phthalate-free.

While industry bodies maintain these products are safe, the "additive effect" of daily chemical exposure remains a growing concern.
