Doctor busts 5 vitamin B12 myths everyone should know

Vitamin B12 is essential for brain function, red blood cell production, and overall energy—but myths about this crucial nutrient persist, leaving many at risk of deficiency. Dr. Tushar Tayal, associate director at CK Birla Hospital, says misconceptions often delay diagnosis and treatment, which can lead to serious neurological and systemic complications.

Myth 1: Only vegetarians are at risk. While B12 is found mainly in meat, dairy, and eggs, simply eating these foods doesn’t guarantee absorption. Older adults, in particular, can be deficient due to declining stomach acid levels.

Myth 2: Deficiency always causes severe symptoms. Early deficiency is often subtle, with fatigue, minor memory issues, irritability, and concentration problems being common. Without treatment, it can progress to anemia, nerve damage, balance issues, and cognitive decline.

Myth 3: Fortified foods are enough. Foods with added B12 may not supply enough, especially for those with impaired absorption. Effectiveness depends on stomach acid and intrinsic factor levels.

Myth 4: All supplements work the same way. Oral tablets may suit mild deficiencies, but malabsorption often requires sublingual or injectable forms. Type, dosage, and administration route all matter.

Myth 5: Normal blood tests rule out deficiency. Some people show deficiency symptoms despite normal B12 levels, particularly if folate is elevated. Advanced tests measuring methylmalonic acid and homocysteine offer a clearer picture at the cellular level.

Dr. Tayal emphasises that early testing and personalised supplementation are key. Misunderstanding vitamin B12 can quietly compromise energy, brain function, and long-term health.

Takeaway: Don’t assume your diet or a routine blood test is enough—consult a doctor if you experience fatigue, memory lapses, or other subtle symptoms. Proper screening, monitoring, and expert guidance are essential to maintaining optimal B12 levels.
