Wiz Khalifa shares emotional final conversation with dad after sudden death
The rapper thanked fans for their support during the 'tough time'
Wiz Khalifa has announced the sudden death of his father, Laurence W. Thomaz.
The 38-year-old rapper, born Cameron Thomaz, shared the heartbreaking news on X, revealing that his father “decided not to wake up” and passed away peacefully.
“Today my father decided not to wake up. I will always love him, miss him and be grateful for the things he taught me,” Wiz wrote. “He went out like a true yogi, at peace and on his own time. I love you forever Laurence W. Thomaz.”
The hip-hop star also reflected on their final conversation, describing a moment that now carries even more meaning.
“The last conversation I had with my dad was him telling me how proud of me he was for the movie I was in and I promised him I would do more. LT Forever.”
Wiz later thanked fans for their outpouring of support. “Thank you all for your kind words. It really means a lot in this tough time and is helping me feel better,” he added, noting that while the passing was sudden, seeing how many people respected his father has brought him comfort.
According to TMZ, Laurence was 63 at the time of his death.
Over the years, Wiz has spoken openly about his close bond with his dad and the role he played in shaping his career.
In a 2016 interview with NME, the rapper recalled how his father opened a recording studio in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, a pivotal moment that helped launch his journey into music.
“I was in second grade when I first started rapping,” Wiz said at the time. “We didn’t have much, so I listened to the radio all the time.”
He described spending countless hours in the studio, adding, “I lived in that studio. And that’s what turned me into who I am today.”
Beyond music, Wiz has often credited fatherhood as one of the most meaningful parts of his life. The rapper shares 12-year-old son Sebastian with ex-wife Amber Rose and previously described becoming a parent as a transformative experience.
During a 2024 appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast, Wiz said being a dad helped him understand his true purpose.
While music is his gift, he explained, parenting “naturally” came to him and has been “really, really rewarding.”
