Nutrition expert warns of 'fear-based mindset' after weight loss drugs
Stopping Ozempic can trigger anxiety and a fear of regaining weight
While medications such as Ozempic and Mounjaro are primarily designed for type 2 diabetes, their secondary effect on weight loss has sparked a global conversation.
However, a growing number of experts are now highlighting the psychological and physical hurdles that appear once the prescription ends.
Certified nutrition coach Chelsey Buckley recently shared a candid warning for those transitioning away from these drugs, noting that many find themselves "anxious, confused…and scared to eat."
Buckley identifies three major challenges for life after Ozempic. First, the return of physical hunger often triggers panic.
She explains that this isn't a sign of weakness, but a result of never being taught “how to fuel your body without relying on the medication.”
Second, a deep-seated fear of regaining the weight can lead to obsessive habits. People find themselves “skipping meals, overthinking every bite, and stuck in the same fear-based mindset that led you to Ozempic in the first place.”
Finally, Buckley insists that reaching a goal weight is merely the beginning. “The real work starts now,” she says, emphasising that long-term success requires “rebuilding your metabolism, your muscles, and your trust in food again.”
Rather than seeking another restrictive diet, those finishing their course need a sustainable plan and emotional support.
The transition period is less about eating as little as possible and more about creating a lifestyle that feels "doable — for life."
Without professional guidance, the "Ozempic journey" may simply lead back to the very struggles it was meant to solve.
